A seaside resort on the Tyrrhenian coast, Forte dei Marmi takes its name from the fort that lies right in the middle of the town, built by the Tuscan Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo to defend the coast, and from the marble in the nearby Apuan Alps, wich was once regularly transported down the mountains to the town pier to be loaded on to ships.
The beautiful area of Forte dei Marmi, once a marshland, is bordered on one side by the sea and the beach, entirely composed of fine golden sand, and on the other by the spectacular Apuan Alps.
The town has many wooded areas, mostly pinewood and a few surviving oaks, ancient plants that were once typical of the area.
The town of Forte dei Marmi, situated on the north coast of the province of Lucca, bordering on that of Massa Carrara, is part of the geographical/historical region of Versilia, with its seaside resorts and charming inland towns such as Pietrasanta, renowned for its community of artist and sculptors, ensuring a wide range of art exhibitions and festivals to be visited in the evening.
The nearby town of Torre del Lago hosts the summer festival dedicated to the operas of Giacomo Puccini, who as born closeby in the medieval walled city of Lucca.
Forte dei Marmi lies in a strategic position permitting visits to many of the most importan historical cities of Tuscany. The beautiful art towns of Tuscany: Pisa and Lucca are at 20 minutes' drive and Florence slightly over one hour's drive away. The pier of the town, originally used to load great blocks of marble onto ships to be transported all over the world, is today the departure point for the local ferry taking visitors, on one hour cruise, to visit the Cinque Terre and Portovenere, the pearls of the Liguria coast.
